Musical Performance

Music has the power to heal our souls, uplift our bodies, and engage our minds in a great social activity. The magic of music inspired Jason Fishburn-Grooten to form Matthew’s Voices in July 2016. This organization aims to provide a nurturing musical environment to Indianapolis’ most marginalized residents through their programs.

Read on to learn how this group is helping improve the community of Indianapolis and how you can get involved and support their mission.

Why Sing?

Group SingingWhy choose to support homelessness through song? It’s simple; music has many restorative properties to support people from all walks of life. The benefits can be broken down in three major ways…

  1. Physical: Singing requires you to control your breathing, which in turns regulates your heart rate, relaxes your body, and brings your system into homeostasis—giving you an overall sense of wellbeing. While singing, you will also have to focus on posture, release muscle tensions, and forge a connection between your mind and body, so the benefits will be felt throughout your being.
  2. Psychological: When singing, you need to focus on the song and your breath, which helps you learn control and concentration. Singing also provides an emotional release that improves your mood, invites exploration and self-expression, and helps build self-esteem.
  3. Social: Coming together as a group to sing helps people bond and encourages and supports positive social interactions. Ultimately, it helps combat disintegration of communities and improves broad social connections.

How Can You Get Involved?

The biggest way to support Matthew’s Voices’ message is to spread the word! Invite anyone experiencing homelessness to join them on Sundays at Roberts Park United Methodist Church or bring some friends to their next performance. You can also invite them to sing at your next event for an uplifting and inspiring community get-together or unique birthday party.
