Andy Mohr Buick GMC created this review of the Canyon vs. Tacoma, so car-buyers can see how they stack up against each other. Read on to see which of these trucks will beat out the competition!

2019 GMC Canyon vs Toyota Tacoma: Engine Specs

The Toyota Tacoma features a standard 3.5L V6 DOHC 24-Valve direct-injection Atkinson-cycle engine, which generates 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

The GMC Canyon offers three different engines, so you can choose what horsepower and towing capacity you need. The largest of the three engines is the available 3.6L V6 gas engine. This engine boasts 308 horsepower and can achieve 275 lb-ft of torque.

In addition to having a more powerful engine, the Canyon is much more fuel-efficient than the Tacoma with an EPA-estimated 20 MPG city and 30 MPG highway in its most efficient engine. The Tacoma has an EPA-estimated 18 MPG city and 22 MPG highway, meaning you will have to visit the gas station more frequently than with the Canyon.

Take Your Trailer Off the RoadGMC Canyon Truck Bed

When it comes to choosing a truck, you want a vehicle with a lot of towing power. The GMC Canyon, when equipped with the Turbo-Diesel engine, has a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds, allowing you to take your camping trailer along on your next adventure. In comparison, the Tacoma only has a maximum towing capacity of 6,800 pounds.

When it comes to taking your trailer on your next excursion, you want to be prepared for whatever conditions may arise. When comparing the Canyon vs. Tacoma, they are very similar in the features they offer, such as Trailer Sway Control and Hill Start Assist. These technologies keep the trailer and your truck heading in the right direction and can apply the brakes to help prevent rollback while ascending hills.

Additionally, both trucks offer an Automatic Rear Locking Differential that can lock both rear wheels to gain more traction on loose of slippery surfaces. You can rest assured that your truck can handle unpredictable road conditions with ease, even with a trailer attached.

The GMC Canyon does feature technology, however, that the Tacoma does not with the available Integrated Trailer Brake Controller and Diesel Exhaust Brake. This feature can provide additional control of the trailer brakes by reducing the amount of braking needed while towing or traveling downhill. This additional control can be helpful when towing your camping trailer to your next destination.

Room for Your Gear

Taking your truck and trailer out into the wild means needing enough room for camping gear and all your other necessities. Carry extra weight with ease in the bed of the Canyon. The Extended Cab model provides a truck bed length of 74 inches with a maximum payload of 2,064 pounds. The Tacoma is slightly smaller with a maximum truck bed length of 73.7 inches and a maximum payload of 1,620 pounds.

When taking long road trips, you want to ensure you’ll have enough room to stretch out your legs. The Tacoma offers 42.9 inches of front legroom. There’s 45 inches of front legroom in the Canyon, though, providing some much-needed extra interior space. Also available in the Canyon are dual rear seats with under seat storage, so you can store your smaller items out of the way during travel.

And the Winner is…

When it comes to bold trucks that fit into your exciting lifestyle, the 2019 GMC Canyon and Toyota Tacoma are enticing options. With extra towing capacity and more room for all your gear, the 2019 GMC Canyon has more to offer than the competition.
