GMC SIERRA 1500 VS TOYOTA TUNDRA

GMC Sierra 1500 vs Toyota Tundra

With so many available medium-duty pickup trucks, there are a lot of potential options to place on your list of vehicles to research. Next, you’ll want to consider the best grouping of powertrain, interior, and technology options to meet your daily needs.

Our team at Andy Mohr Buick GMC has compared the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 and Toyota Tundra to help you make an informed decision. If you’re near the Fishers, Indianapolis, or Noblesville, Indiana, areas, our team would love to help you with your next vehicle purchase.

SIERRA 1500 VS TUNDRA: POWERTRAIN SPECS

The Sierra 1500 comes standard with a 4.3L EcoTec® 3 V6 engine that’s paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain option produces 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque.

Other available options include a 5.3L EcoTec® 3 V8 engine, which produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, and a 6.2L EcoTec® 3 V8 engine that generates 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. These powerful options are great for Sierra 1500 towing, which can pull up to 11,800 pounds and large payloads up to 2,250 pounds.

The most powerful and only powertrain available for the Tundra is the 5.7L Aluminum i-FORCE V8, which produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Its towing and payload capabilities, however, pale in comparison to the Sierra 1500. This powertrain option is only able to tow up to 10,200 pounds and carry a payload up to 1,730 pounds.

FUEL-EFFICIENT PERFORMANCE

If you want to make sure you’re using less fuel, so you can keep working all day, you’re going to want to choose a fuel-efficient truck. The Toyota Tundra model’s only engine option is the 5.6L V8 engine, which only provides an EPA-estimated 13 city/18 highway MPG.

To really get ahold of a fuel-efficient truck, you’re going to want to look to the GMC Sierra 1500. That’s because this vehicle offers drivers an available 2.7L Turbocharged engine that can achieve up to an EPA-estimated 20 city/23 highway MPG.

ROBUST TRANSMISSION OPTIONS

You may be asking yourself: How does the GMC Sierra 1500 achieve such excellent fuel economy? One of the ways it can provide such an efficient use of power is to offer an available 10-speed automatic transmission. By making use of a transmission with a high gear count, you’re able to get just the right amount of power that you need without using too much fuel.

Compare this to the Toyota Tundra, which only offers a standard 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. This transmission doesn’t offer as many gears, leaving you with less ways to achieve the power you need. The result is more gas consumption as your truck works harder in a smaller selection of gears.

A LOOK AT THE GMC MULTIPRO™ TAILGATE

GMC Sierra 1500 vs Toyota TundraYour truck bed is an important piece of utility, and the GMC Sierra 1500 and the Toyota Tundra both offer some nice features to help you make the most of your tailgate. For the Toyota Tundra, you’ll have an Easy Lower and Lift Tailgate designed to make it easy for you to use your tailgate over extended periods.

You’ll find that the GMC Sierra 1500 is easier to use, with its available GMC MultiPro™ Tailgate. This system is designed to allow you to fold your tailgate into six different settings for extra utility. You’ll have modes for a built-in load stop, so you can prevent longer cargo from shifting. There’s even a feature for a built-in fold-out step to make walking onto your truck bed easier.

If you want to customize your tailgate, you can equip it with a MultiPro™ Audio System. This provides your truck with a set of weatherproof speakers built right into your tailgate, so you can easily listen to music out on the trail with your friends.

SIERRA 1500 VS TUNDRA: INTERIOR

The Sierra 1500 is a very spacious truck. It provides an impressive maximum 43.11 inches and 44.53 inches of respective headroom and legroom for front-seat passengers. Back-seat passengers will also have plenty of room to sprawl out in, with a maximum of 40.12 inches and 43.40 inches of respective headroom and legroom in the rear.

The Tundra does have reasonable cabin space, but it’s still not as roomy as the Sierra 1500. The Tundra CrewMax option offers 39.7 inches of headroom and 42.5 inches of legroom for front-seat passengers, along with a maximum 38.9 inches of headroom and 42.3 inches of legroom for back-seat passengers.

The extra space provided in the Sierra 1500 can be used to fit more tools for a project or help keep you and your passengers comfortable after a long day on the job.

2021 SIERRA 1500 VS 2021 TUNDRA: TECHNOLOGY

GMC Sierra 1500 vs Toyota TundraEvery effort was made to ensure that the Sierra 1500 and the Tundra make your life easier. That’s why these two vehicles boast infotainment systems equipped with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration. With these features, you’ll be able to bring specific apps on your infotainment display, so you can stay informed while on the road.

What’s especially unique about the GMC Sierra 1500, though, is that it offers drivers an available Head-Up Display. This system projects information from your dashboard up onto your windshield, so it’s always in view. Checking how fast you’re going, what direction you need to turn, and even the angle of the terrain will be easy with this high-tech system.

Without a comparable system in the Tundra, you’ll have to tear your eyes off the fast-paced road ahead when you want to view your navigational directions or current driving speed.
