GMC Terrain vs. Ford Escape
The GMC Terrain and Ford Escape are two compact SUVs that offer lots of space, safety features, and a stylish ride. They can also keep you in control when rough weather rolls through, too. So, which one is right for you?
To help drivers in the Fishers, Indianapolis, and Noblesville, IN, areas decide, Andy Mohr Buick GMC looked at what they have to offer in this 2022 GMC Terrain vs. Ford Escape comparison.

The GMC Terrain is a perfect example of how a tough and versatile SUV can also be customizable and comfortable all at once. It features seating for five, plenty of space to stretch out, and lots of ways to get comfortable with amenities like heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats.
On top of relaxing and enjoying the ride, you can also admire its stylish design. The Terrain offers a luxurious aesthetic with classic wood accents, leather seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Talk about putting on the ritz!
In addition to looking sharp, it can also carry everything you need. The Terrain comes with a large trunk, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, and a folding front passenger’s seat that lets you slide in cargo that’s up to eight feet long.
The Ford Escape also comes with plenty of cargo room, but it doesn’t offer a folding front passenger’s seat. You won’t find as many amenities in it, either. For example, it doesn’t offer heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, or wood inlays. Customizing the Escape just isn’t as easy!
To give you peace of mind, the 2022 GMC Terrain offers lots of safety features. For example, every trim comes with the GMC Pro Safety system. It helps prevent accidents with driver assist technology, such as:
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Forward Collision Alert
- Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
- Front Pedestrian Braking
- Following Distance Indicator
While all these sensors watch the road, the HD Rear Vision Camera lets you see what’s behind you when you’re backing up. It makes it easy to back out of a parking spot, parallel park, and line up with your trailer. Plus, with the HD Surround Vision camera system you can check every angle of your SUV. It uses a series of cameras to create a 360-degree bird’s-eye view.
The 2022 Ford Escape also comes with a series of smart safety features and includes its own backup camera. However, it doesn’t offer anything that gives you an overhead view of your vehicle. Navigating crowded parking lots may be even more of a challenge.
Both the GMC Terrain and Ford Escape offer all-wheel drive and selectable driving modes that can make your SUV more adaptable. However, the GMC is always prepared to live up to its name by helping you get up and over anything that stands in your way.
The 2022 Terrain hits the trails with a 9-speed automatic transmission and is available with a premium suspension that includes enhanced shock control. The Escape doesn’t offer enhanced shock control, and its standard 8-speed automatic doesn’t give you as many gears. Your great escape may be limited to flat, easily-navigable roads only in the Ford model.
