How to Maintain an Electric Vehicle

How to Maintain an Electric Vehicle

There are many benefits to buying an electric car. One of which is that these vehicles demand less maintenance than traditional gas-powered vehicles. That is because things such as oil changes and spark plug replacements are no longer required.

Although, there are still some key things you want to ensure you are doing to maintain the performance of your electric vehicle. Whether you are considering getting an electric vehicle or just got a new EV and want to make sure you do everything possible to keep it performing its best along the roads of Fishers, Indianapolis, and Noblesville, Indiana, our Andy Mohr Buick GMC team is here to share with you how to maintain an electric vehicle.

Take Care of the Battery

Your electric vehicle relies on the energy created from its battery pack to get it moving along the roads. That is why you will want to make sure you are taking proper care of it and take the right steps that will positively impact its longevity.

When it comes to charging, you will want to keep the battery between 20% and 80% when feasible. Charging the battery all the way to full or letting it get too low can cause it to degrade at a quicker rate. Of course, long trips are fine to completely charge it to 100% and let it run to almost zero, but for day-to-day travels, it is best to keep it within that 20% to 80% range.

Also, you will want to keep your battery in a moderate climate as much as possible. While you certainly won’t have a say over how hot or cold it gets outside, parking in the shade in the summer and within the garage if able in the winter can go a long way into preserving the performance of your EV’s battery.

Best Ways to Charge Your Electric Vehicle

Charging your vehicle will be all about balance. When you need just a quick boost in range to continue to get to where you are going or while running errands throughout the day, stopping at a fast charging station will be your best option.

Routinely, though, it will be best for the longevity of the battery pack for you to charge directly at home. That is because charging it more slowly will help to preserve the battery’s capabilities in the long run. This is the most convenient time to charge, too, since you can plug in your vehicle and let it be when you are just hanging at home with the family or company you have over.

Tire and Brake Maintenance of an Electric Vehicle

Electric Vehicle maintenance

One specific benefit of electric vehicle maintenance is that the brakes will require less frequent maintenance. That is because due to regenerative braking, there is less friction being created while braking that will lessen the amount of wear the brake pads experience. Some electric cars can be driven for well-over 100,000 miles before a brake replacement is needed.

Just like any other car, the tires on an EV will start to wear over time. That is why you will also want to check the condition of your vehicle’s tires once a month. This is something you can do in just a few minutes at home. Make sure there is enough tire tread left and look for any potential uneven wearing of the tires. To help your tires last for many miles, you will want to have them regularly rotated.
