Signs You Need an Oil Change

oil change

When we think of the many ways in which we can improve our vehicle’s performance and extend its lifespan, the little maintenance items should be at the top of the list. The small jobs can make the biggest difference in terms of performance.

One of the easiest ways that Fishers, Indianapolis, and Noblesville drivers can extend the life of their car is to stay up to date on oil changes.

The Andy Mohr Buick GMC team has written this article just to help you understand when you need one.

WHAT DOES ENGINE OIL DO? oil change

Have you ever thought of how many moving parts your engine is comprised of? It’s a lot. And most tend to operate at high speeds. Engine oil protects these parts in the following ways:

  • Lubricates, and prevents irreparable friction damage
  • Cleans out harmful engine debris
  • Protects from extreme temperatures (hot or cold)

Failing to keep your engine loaded with fresh oil can result in serious damage. In the end, that can cost you a lot of money, too.

KNOW THE SIGNS YOU NEED AN OIL CHANGE

When the time comes to change your engine oil, your car will most certainly let you know. As a matter of fact, you’ll be given multiple warnings. Be sure to heed them promptly, or you could cause your car undue wear and tear.

1.You See A Dashboard Light oil pressure warning light

Perhaps the most obvious sign will be the light on your dashboard. When the time for a change arrives, the oil light should be the first to come on. This self-explanatory indicator is shaped just like an oil can.

However, the “Check Engine” light may come on in these cases, too. Either way, be sure to contact your mechanic.

2.You’ve Noticed An Odd Color To The Oil

You should be checking your oil regularly, too – perhaps every few thousand miles. When the car is off and the engine cool, pop the hood and remove the oil dipstick. Wipe it down with a clean cloth then dip it back in to test.

If the oil appears to be black in color, then it needs to be changed. Healthy, effective oil is amber. The darker it is, the more debris it has collected.'

3.You Hear Knocking oil change service

Remember how we said oil is a lubricant? Well, when it’s low, your parts will start to rub against each other. They may grind, or even make a knocking sound. Trust us, this means that engine damage is on the horizon.

4.You See Black Exhaust Smoke

In some cases, that black oil may present itself as black exhaust smoke. Once your oil has reached this point, it may be critical. Be sure to have it changed right away.

5.You Smell Oil In The Cabin

Last but not least, you may notice an odor in your car’s cabin. The smell of oil is thick and unpleasant. It’s not something you want to put up with.

Even worse, if you smell this, your engine may be close to overheating. Get some new oil in there to help moderate the temperature.
