Check Engine Light

To start us off, probably the most important light everyone should pay attention to is the check engine light. This light will appear as a yellow outline of an engine block. It’s a fairly universal symbol that’s used in many different vehicles.

What’s notable about this light though, is that it’s a warning noting that the engine isn’t working properly. This isn’t a light you want to sit on, as there’s a wide variety of possible malfunctions your car may be experiencing. From a loose gas cap to a broken catalytic converter, no matter what, try to fix the problem promptly.

Charging System Light

In the event that you’re experiencing a malfunction with your battery’s charging system, a light that looks like a red battery will appear. If this light comes on you may be having a failing battery or there may be some other problem with your electrical system.

It’s best to try to pull over as soon as possible if you see this light activate on the road. There’s a possibility your battery may shut off while you’re driving, so avoid using any electrical systems like air conditioning or the radio, and call a tow truck immediately.

Brake System Light

Another important light to watch for is your brake system light. This will appear on your dashboard simply as the word “BRAKE” in red letters. This light is meant to tell you when your brake system is malfunctioning. It may be less responsive or not responsive at all, so pull over quickly.

Low Tire Pressure Light

Over time your tires will lose pressure simply from normal wear and tear. You may not think too much about it and that’s why the low tire pressure light exists. This light will appear almost like a yellow horseshoe with an exclamation mark in the center. Simply try to get your tires filled up as soon as possible.

Low Oil Pressure Light

If you haven’t changed your oil recently, a red oil-can-shaped light may appear on your dashboard. This light is usually the first sign that your oil level is low, and you should have the oil replenished. Driving with low oil can very easily damage your engine, so it’s best to remain aware of where your oil life is.
